Word & Vocabulary Games Grades 3–5
Word Chain Relay
Each new word has to start with the last letter of the word before it — a fast circle game that builds vocabulary on the fly.

What you need
- None
Setup
Circle or rows, clear turn order.
How to run it
- The first student says any word (e.g. "turtle").
- The next student must say a new word starting with the last letter of the previous word ("turtle" → "elephant" → "table"…).
- No repeats allowed — if a word’s already been used, the next student has to think of a different one.
- Keep the chain going as long as possible; if someone gets stuck, the class can offer one hint before moving to the next player.
Variations
- Restrict words to a category (animals, food, vocabulary from this week’s spelling list) for a subject-tie-in version.
- Add a 5-second time limit per turn for a faster, higher-pressure round with an older class.
